Community-Based Learning Opportunities
We have a variety of service opportunities for you and we look forward to helping you build significant community engagement into your time here at NDNU.
Currently, we have two main streams of partnership, both connected closely to the legacy of Sr. Dorothy: InnVision Shelter Network and Catholic Worker/ Potrero Nuevo Farm.
We have new opportunities all the time, both within and outside these partnerships. Let us know what you have done and what you would like to do in terms of service learning--we want to bring that into the work of the Sr. Dorothy Stang Center.
We will help coordinate carpooling and transportation planning!
Partner #1 InnVision Shelter Network
Everywhere that Sr. Dorothy worked in Brazil, she was working with families on the edge. We have students working with families facing desperate challenges, and we do this principally at five sites down the El Camino/101 corridor of San Mateo County.
- Family Crossroads in Daly City
- First Step for Families in San Mateo
- Maple Street Shelter in the harbor area of Redwood City
- Redwood House in downtown Redwood City
- Haven House in Menlo Park
Details on these sites and the work they do can be found at http://www.ivsn.org. We can also set you up to work at other agencies serving this vulnerable homeless population in San Francisco and Santa Clara counties.
Remember: we will help coordinate carpooling and transportation planning!
Partner #2 Catholic Worker of Half Moon Bay/Potrero Nuevo Farm
As the years progressed, Sr. Dorothy moved from the towns and settlements further into the forest, following the urban poor seeking a better life as sustainable farmers. We too are reaching out to the rural poor in San Mateo County in this project where we do farm work alongside them on an amazing organic farm, Potrero Nuevo, that provides all its bounty to the poor, principally through the Half Moon Bay Catholic Worker House of Hospitality.
Opportunity A
We have two main farm work shifts (beginning time can be slightly adjusted:)
- Mondays from 12:30-4:30; OR
- Thursdays from 9:45-1:30
A light meal and social time always follows the work session. Check out this website for information on Potrero Nuevo Farm: http://potreronuevofarm.org
Opportunity B
The folks at the Catholic Worker of Half Moon Bay can use additional volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 8:15-9:45am, serving breakfast to the poor and helping with a session of ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction.
Additionally, on Fridays and Saturdays, there are opportunities for smaller projects.
We will be organizing with this Catholic Worker House an Annual March for Justice each spring.
Opportunity C
Tutoring Opportunity with Redwood City Catholic Worker English Language School
