Faculty Scholars
The Dorothy Stang Faculty Scholars Program was established for faculty interested in teaching community based learning/research courses (CBL/CBR). These scholars are selected annually through a competitive application process and learn “best practices” of CBL/CBR by participating in professional development/mentoring activities. Currently, there are nineteen scholars who represent NDNU's three schools, both undergraduate and graduate studies, and fifteen disciplines. The goal of the Dorothy Stang Faculty Scholars Program is to develop a university-wide community of faculty scholars at NDNU.

Laughter, squealing and awe…who knew science could be so much fun?
Every year for the last three years, hundreds of children from Nesbit Elementary School in Belmont have paid a visit to the NDNU campus to witness the wonders of magnetism, marvel at the mystery of disappearing ink, explore skulls and fossils, turn baking soda into rocket fuel and experience other wonders of modern science, all thanks to Isabelle Haithcox and her Science in Action (Physics 2000) students.
Teaching science to children had long been a passion for Haithcox but until she was approached by another faculty member to start a community based learning course for the sciences, the opportunity had never presented itself. Under Haithcox’s leadership, NDNU students spend a day a week teaching science to kindergartners through third graders. The kids even get to come to campus to witness experiments performed in the “big” lab. The program is a win-win for everyone. The teachers get help in their classrooms; NDNU students, some of whom aspire to be teachers, get practical experience teaching science; the kids are exposed to science and have fun learning it. And Isabelle? – She’s the one walking around campus with a smile on her face. |
