Kevin B. Maxwell, Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies, received his PhD in Religious Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas (1983). Among his scholarly writings are a book on an African traditional religion (Bemba Myth and Ritual: The Impact of Literacy on an Oral Culture), several book reviews and monographs, including one on the Bagobo people of Mindanao in the Philippines. His other publications in the field of contemporary theology and critical biblical scholarship take the shape of many sermons, retreats and workshops he has given to various Anglican and Catholic communities aroundthe Bay Area. He has been at NDNU since 1986, teaching a variety of courses on world religions, religion and mythology, biblical studies, philosophy, and marriage and friendship. His research interest is on world religions and how the academic category of “myth” enriches the understanding of both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. His teaching focus is on interpreting the religious traditions of the world so that their past can come alive and illumine the present with new possiblities for personal and social transformation. In philosophy, he is a student and proponent of the critical realism of Bernard Lonergan.
