Sr. Pat – as she is known by students, friends, and colleagues alike – is the last teaching sister at NDNU, and the History and Political Science Department has been her home for over 30 years. Her association with the campus goes back even further, however, because she was also a student, graduating from the College of Notre Dame (as the institution was then known) in 1963 with a degree in History and minors in Theology, Philosophy, and Music. She subsequently completed a Master’s degree at Sacramento State University in 1976, and has taught in elementary and high schools in California and served as the first Campus Minister at California State University, Hayward.
Sr. Pat brings to her work with students a wealth of experience and the passion for social justice and global understanding that animates the Sisters of Notre Dame and the University. She lived and taught in Nigeria and brings to the classroom an internationalist perspective, exemplified best by her founding of the four area studies classes in the department’s curriculum. She was active for over a decade with Cesar Chavez and the farmworkers’ movement,in the civil rights movement, the Africa Faith and Justice Network, the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, and the World Affairs Council of Northern California.
Sr. Pat retired in 2006 – or so it is rumored – but her energy and wit have never flagged, and she remains an active member of the department and the broader community, teaching classes each semester and continuing to organize the University archives.
