President's Office

History of the President's Office

The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur founded Notre Dame de Namur University, formerly College of Notre Dame, in 1851. Until 1923, the President of the University was the Superior for the Sisters of Notre Dame. From 1923 to 1952, a sister other than the Superior was the Dean of the College. During the presidency of Sister Helen Madeline in the early 1950s, an amendment stated there would be a President of the University as well as a President for the Board of Trustees. In 1994, the bylaws formulated by the Board of Trustees permitted the President of the University to be a lay person.
