The Bohemian Submission Guidelines
2017-2018 cover art submissions deadline: October 31, 2017.
Submitting Your Work
All submissions should be sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include a very short, 1 to 2 line biography with each piece (see past issues for examples).
The Bohemian is an award-winning art and literature journal that showcases the talents of the students of Notre Dame de Namur University. We are interested in the best, original works of new and previously-published writers and artists. We are committed to reflecting the full range of talent in our NDNU community, including poetry and fine art from a multitude of genres and mediums. Writing and art with different and new genres are always welcome.
We are interested in well-written pieces on personal, political, cultural and philosophical themes. However, we do not accept journalistic features, academic works, or opinion pieces. Submitters are limited to five (5) literary submissions per publication. Look at past issues of The Bohemian for examples. Work will not be returned.
Literary submissions must be submitted in a Word document, typed, double-spaced, and accompanied by your complete contact information. We will consider long pieces; however, if you wish the entire piece to be printed, it must not exceed 4,500 words. There is no minimum length. We recommend and greatly appreciate email submissions. Sorry, we cannot accept submissions in PDF format.
In an effort to accomplish a publication that exemplifies NDNU’s immense diversity, we accept submissions in foreign languages.
Art submissions should be original and creative. Nudity is acceptable as long as it is presented in a tasteful manner. All submitted artwork must be in JPG format, whether originally so or scanned from a painting/drawing/etching (see the Art Department for scanning assistance). They should be no smaller than 1.0 megabyte in size. Anything smaller than 1.0 megabyte cannot be printed adequately. Pieces should be in black and white and be no smaller than 8.5 x 11 inches in diameter. Submitters are limited to five (5) art submissions per publication.
Cover Art Submissions
Cover art submissions should be unique and creative. Nudity is acceptable as long as it is presented in a tasteful manner. Submitted pieces can be in color or black and white. They must be submitted electronically and should follow the general art submission guidelines regarding electronic format/sizing. The staff will choose to add the journal title and publication year to cover and artwork at a later time.
Cover art submissions must be at least 8.5 x 11 inches in diameter. Because the cover extends from front to back and is longer width wise, a wider (landscape orientation) artwork piece is better than a taller piece, or you may submit two 8.5” wide by 11” tall pieces—one for the front cover and one for the back. The higher the resolution, the better for the cover.
