Mary Criscione, RSM, Ph.D.

Mary Criscione was born and raised in Southern California, and attended Pomona College in Claremont before joining the Sisters of Mercy. She earned her BA and MA degrees in Theology from the University of San Francisco. Her doctoral work was done at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, where she earned her Ph.D. in Biblical Studies (New Testament). Her dissertation focused on the literary and rhetorical power of the women characters in Mark’s Gospel.

Dr. Criscione has previously taught at the University of San Francisco and at Santa Clara University. In addition to academic classes, she also has enjoyed working in retreat and workshop settings. Whatever the venue, her work seeks the intersection of scripture and contemporary questions, of received tradition and critical feminist engagement.
