Non-degree Certificates

NDNU's School of Business and Management offers professional workshops that bring information, skills training, and professional networking opportunities. These instructor-led learning workshops are designed to deepen professional knowledge and real-world expertise in a given subject. Certificate Programs deliver focused courses that are not for academic credit, but rather to earn a certificate of completion giving the participant knowledge for career entry or advancement. Because these courses are offered as Continuing Education Units (CEUs) they are not part of any lengthy degree, diploma, or other credential program. Taught by experienced practitioners, participants are able to acquire needed skills as well receive a certificate that documents their professional development and participation in continuing education activities for career entry or advancement. These certificate programs are a nationally recognized and respected method of granting non-degree credit.


Applied Leadership Certificate

This certificate program offered by the School of Business and Management uses an evidence-based approach to understand how to maximize leadership performance through the use of scientific, objective, data-driven approaches to decision-making regarding leadership techniques that lead to creating an organization that reinforces continuous improvement.

The program is taught over four Saturdays, a format that has been very successful for working individuals.

The program is designed for those who want to go beyond just theories of leadership and to instead look at applied approaches to managing employees based on research that shows managers how to fully engage employees. Program material can be applied in profit and non-profit settings.

Program areas include understanding how to:

  1. Use evidence-based management to increase the quality of management and employee decision-making.
  2. Measure leadership efforts.
  3. Capitalize on leadership / followership dynamic.
  4. Lead in a manner that results in employees maximizing their efforts through the use of the technology of performance management, including in culturally and internationally diverse environments.
  5. Create ongoing change programs through the use of continuous process improvement.
  6. Create effective team environments.
  7. Increase customer and client satisfaction through the use of TQM-based techniques that emphasize continuous improvement through ongoing employee development.
  8. Create accurate and simple to use appraisal, development, and competency systems.
  9. How to avoid the most common management mistakes and lawsuits.
  10. Understand that what happens in a work environment does so because of what management causes to happen (often unintentionally).

You will earn 3.2 CEUs for four classes.

Human Resource Management Certificate

This certificate program offered by the School of Business and Management addresses the “best practices” in this demanding field through an up-to-date evidence-based management approach to program development. The program is taught over four Saturdays with a one-week break in between classes, a format that has been very successful for working individuals. Students have the option of registering for an additional two-week session to receive an International Human Resource Management Certificate.

The program is designed for those looking at a career in HR, for managers who want to understand how to effectively manage their employees, and for senior managers who want to understand their HR responsibilities and how to create and monitor effective HR systems.

The program is designed to broaden your knowledge base, update you on vital information, and train you in key areas of human resource. Program content includes:

  • HR program development and responsibilities for HR professionals.
  • Daily HR responsibilities for managers and senior managers that increase employee motivation while decreasing operational costs.
  • Maximizing employee productivity, innovation, and creativity with the technology of performance management & leadership, including gaining a basic understanding of total quality management, continuous improvement, and Lean-Six Sigma.
  • Problem solving and conflict resolution, including across cultures.
  • Increasing employee motivation through the correct application of managing within the law.
  • How to create customer demand by using a holistic marketing approach to employee management.
  • Managing a diverse and international workforce.
  • Managing virtual teams.
  • How to use evidence-based management to increase critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Effectively using IT, including cloud computing, to help decrease costs and to increase customer and client satisfaction.

Instructors have more than 20 years experience in creating and re-organizing HROD programs in for-profit and non-profit organizations. They have extensive teaching and course development experience in areas such as Human Resource Management, Organizational Behavior, Communication in Organizations, Diversity, Recruitment & Selection, Labor Relations, Supervision, Ethics in Business, Employment Law, Motivation and Productivity, Performance Management, Development of Innovation & Creativity in Organizations, Critical Thinking, and Conflict Management.

There are no prerequisites for this certificate course and you do not need to be a student at NDNU. You will earn 3.2 CEUs for four classes.

Fundamentals of Project Management

This Certificate Program will broaden your knowledge base, update you on vital information, and train you in key areas of project management. Focus will be made on how to establish a common understanding of project goals and roles and responsibilities. Participants will see demonstration of how to break down the project goals in order to complete the tasks which accomplish the scope of the project. Uncertainties will be addressed and how to identify and manage risk throughout the project. Learn how to motivate the team and mange conflict. Finally students will learn how to effectively close out a project. You will earn a total of 4 CEU's for this five day program as well receive a certificate of accomplishment.

Introduction to ArcGIS I

Participants will learn fundamental GIS concepts using ESRI's full-featured ArcGIS software for visualizing, creating, managing, and analyzing geographic data. This course is designed for those who are new to ArcGIS and to GIS in general and provides the foundation for becoming a successful ArcGIS Desktop user. Students earn professional development hours or continuing education units learning fundamental GIS concepts and become familiar with the range of functionality available in the software. In course exercises, they work with ArcGIS Desktop and see how it provides a complete GIS software solution. There are no prerequisites for this certificate course and you do not need to be a student at NDNU. You will earn a total of 1.6 CEU's for the two-Saturday program. Upon completion of the class, students will receive a GIS certificate of accomplishment.

Certificate Programs


Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are a nationally recognized means of recording non-credit study. Each Certificate Program will be held on the Notre Dame de Namur University campus. By attending all modules, you will receive all course materials and a Certificate. 1.0 CEU is awarded for each 10 hours of instruction. You will be awarded a certificate based upon your attendence. CEU courses are graded on a Pass/Fail basis and may neither be applied to, nor substituted for, degree requirements. An official transcript is available from the Registrar's Office upon request.

Add/Drop Policy: You can officially drop enrollment one week prior to class with a written notice submitted to the University Registrar. This will facilitate a 100% refund. Students who enroll in the certificate program are responsible for attending all of the sessions. You can add the course on the first day of class when you complete the registration form and pay in full.
