Frequently Asked Questions

Undergrad Business Day ~ Internship Program

Why should I do an internship?

Internships are required for all Business and Communication majors. An internship allows you to explore career opportunities within your major field of study before you graduate. Through an internship at an organization or business you can apply “real life” experience to your academic learning. An internship may also help you better define and target your career goals. As well as make you a stronger candidate for jobs after graduation.

When should I do an internship?

You can do an internship if you are a junior and have completed two upper division Business Major Core Courses, or if you are a senior. In exceptional circumstances, you can ask for special permission from the instructor to complete the internship requirement prior to your junior year. Upper Division Business Major Core Courses are:

FN131

Corporate Financial Management

GB161

Business Analysis Using Spreadsheets

GB183

Legal Environment of Business

GB192

Business Policies and Strategy

MG196

Management Principles and Organizational Behavior

MK160

Marketing Principles

Which internship class should I take?

Day Business Students must enroll in GB 188 to do a business internship. Business majors are required to complete one, three-unit internship of 120-150 hours. GB 188 is  offered in the fall and spring semesters.

Communications majors should enroll in CM 160, Communication Internship. Communication majors are required to complete two, three unit internships of 120-150 hours each.

Can I do more than one internship?

Yes, you can enroll in GB 188 more than once. GB 188 is a three [3] unit upper division class.

Can I get a paid internship?

Paid internships are definitely more difficult to find, but not impossible. Pay rates for internships vary from a set stipend (e.g., $500 for the entire period you work for them) to an hourly rate. They rarely provide benefits.

Who is currently looking for interns?

What’s the difference between an internship and a part-time job?

An internship is for a limited amount of time—usually one semester (15 weeks) and is directly related to your field of study. Additionally, by registering for an internship class, such as CM 160 or GB 188, you also receive academic credit. A part-time job may or may not be related to your field of study and you will most likely keep the job for the entire school year. Both an internship and a part-time job can lead to full-time employment.

I already have a job. Can that count as my internship?

The internship experience is intended for new career opportunities and exploration. However, we understand your time commitments. We will work with you and your employer to find a way for you to learn something new by taking on a special project, receiving specialized training, and/or taking on additional responsibilities.

How do I find an internship?

One of the best ways is to “network.” Tell everyone you know—family, friends, professors, classmates—that you’re looking for an internship. Find answers to these items on the Student Internship Resources web site.

How many hours do I have to work?

You must work 120 -150 hours to receive three units of credit. However, the organization may have its own requirements for the number of hours you work per week.  Remember, your internship needs to be a “win-win” for everyone.
