Liberal Studies

NDNU’s Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies is offered within the School of Education and Leadership, and prepares students for a career in elementary education.

The Liberal Studies program is specifically designed to present the student with a wealth of academically rigorous and intellectually stimulating courses in relevant content areas. Interdisciplinary in nature, students do substantial work in language studies, literature, culture and language, mathematics, natural science, history and social science, the arts, and human development. The goal of such breadth is to prepare and encourage students to become lifelong learners, acquiring knowledge and developing skills and habits of thinking that will continue into their professional careers.

See the NDNU General Catalog for complete program requirements.

The Liberal Studies program remains one of the largest undergraduate majors on campus, and while the major is especially recommended for students planning a career in elementary education, it is also appropriate for any student seeking a broad liberal arts education, including those preparing for law school.

Career Preparation

Notre Dame de Namur University has an outstanding reputation in the field of teacher preparation. In addition to the academic quality of the undergraduate and graduate programs, the Liberal Studies/Education Department advisors provide step-by-step guidance to the student in choosing the best course of study that fits the individual’s background and interests and state credentialing requirements. NDNU offers Multiple Subject, Single Subject, Special Education, Reading, and Administrative Services Tier 1 Credentials, as well as various master’s degrees. Our student teachers are well placed in local districts and are often employed in those districts upon graduation.

While the Liberal Studies program specifically prepares NDNU graduates for the field of elementary education, many of the courses are appropriate for those seeking teaching careers in middle school or high school. Such students should major in the area they wish to teach (i.e., English, history, etc.) and work with faculty of the School of Education and Leadership to prepare for the Single Subject credential program upon graduation.

NDNU’s School of Education and Leadership

The School of Education and Leadership aspires to develop community leaders, teacher leaders, and administrative leaders.

Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, NDNU is a multifaceted university offering four bachelor degrees and over 15 graduate degrees and certificates. The School of Education and Leadership, under the direction of the Dean, Joanne C. Rossi, Ed.D., offers bachelor’s degrees in liberal studies and human services in addition to education credentials, certificates, and master’s degrees. The credential programs are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). The Program was reaccredited in 1998.

Through the School of Education and Leadership, the Center for Access and Equity links NDNU with curricular and co-curricular programs, and emphasizes our goal of collaboration with community partners. Faculty and students work with economically challenged students over several years in a variety of programs designed to support their graduation from high school and advancement to college.
