The Study Abroad experience is available to all NDNU students! The university is affiliated with many overseas programs which allow students to select from a wide variety of summer, semester, and year programs. Students from all majors can receive credit while studying at overseas universities in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa ,and South America. The fees for overseas study are comparable to the cost of on-campus tuition and housing. Frequently, scholarships are available and financial aid can be transferred. Internships and service learning experiences are included in many programs.
Steps for Study Abroad
- Get information on approved programs (Quad, Career Center, Campus Center)
- Do a web search, examine brochures, and choose potential programs.
- Meet with the study abroad advisor (Ann Fathman, Campus Center 2)
- Meet with academic advisor to examine the program you are interested in.
- Talk to Student Financing Office about financial aid (optional).
- Apply to the program of your choice.
- When accepted, obtain the Petition to Study Abroad from the Study Abroad Office.
- Return the petition to the Study Abroad Office by the deadlines indicated.
Take courses in art history, music, sociology in English or Spanish at University of Granada in Spain with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). Live with a host family, enjoy group excursions, and take Spanish classes at any level for a semester or year.
Spend time at the university of your choice in Australia or New Zealand through the AustraLearn Program. You can study computer science in Adelaide, business in Sydney, environmental science in Cairn. Internships are available in marketing, education, communications, and many other fields.
Semester at Sea
Travel around the world aboard a ship with 500 students from other universities. Credits for a semester or summer are earned through University of Virginia. Visit many different places such as Ghana, India, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Honolulu while you live aboard the ship and attend classes.
Study at universities through Ireland with IFSA (Institute for Study Abroad) at Butler University. Special programs include theatre studies at Trinity College in Dublin, business at University of Limerick, and Irish studies at National University of Ireland in Galway.
Study Swahili and civilization in Nairobi then do field work and live in an East African village for a semester through the School for International Training. You will receive 15 credits in language and social sciences for this exciting semester.
Work on a service project in Montpelier, France while you study French language and culture at the university though IPSL (International Partnership for Service Learning and Leadership). Live with a family and volunteer at a food bank, pharmacy, retirement home, or school.
Live in Hangzhou, China and take courses in Chinese and English at Zhejiang University. Study Chinese business, history, literature, painting and participate in a service learning project. You will live in a residence hall and take trips to Shanghai, Beijing, and other points of interest.
Study in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lima, Peru; or Valparaiso, Chile with International Studies Abroad Program (ISA). Take courses in language, math, history, business and science. Your stay will include a variety of cultural activities and excursions.
Take courses at universities in England, Scotland, or Wales through Arcadia University. You may combine your study with an internship in government, business or social service institution.
Additional opportunities for off-campus study
Students at NDNU may also study off-campus for a semester or year at one of its sister colleges, Trinity College in Washington, D.C. or Emmanuel College in Boston. Students participating in these programs can transfer credits and financial aid and need not file for an official leave of absence. Students also have the opportunity attend the Washington Semester Program. The University has an institutional agreement to nominate students each year to participate in this program through American University in Washington D.C.
NDNU faculty also organize programs for students abroad. Students can receive credit for participating in trips and service projects. In recent years, trips to Italy and a project in Guadalajara, Mexico have offered valuable off-campus experiences for students.
