NDNU Awards Announced at Annual Banquet

April 30 – The Notre Dame de Namur athletics department held its annual Sports Awards Banquet on Thursday.  The banquet, sponsored by SAAC (Student Athletic Advisory Committee), featured Athletic Department Awards for the top men’s and women’s performers and team awards for several programs.

Athletic Department Awards

Female Freshman of the Year:  Pamela Alano (Volleyball)
Alano appeared in 74 games and led team in assists per game. She was second in total assists and finished sixth in the conference with 6.26 assists per game.

Male Freshman of the Year:  Brandon Miller (Lacrosse)
Miller played in every game this season and made ten starts. He was a major part of the defense that finished eighth in Division II in goals allowed.

Female Newcomer of the Year:  Tanaia Keyes (Women's Basketball)
Keyes earned 1st Team All-PacWest after leading the Argonauts offense throughout conference play. She averaged 11 points, five rebounds and two assists in 18 conference games.

Male Newcomer of the Year:  David Wulff (Men's Soccer)
Wulff was named 1st Team All-PacWest after appearing in 15 games on defense. He helped anchor the Argos defense which ranked second in the conference.

Female Scholar Athlete of the Year: Marissa Miller (Volleyball)

Male Scholar Athlete of the Year:  Daniel Pena (Men’s Soccer)

Co-Female Athlete of the Year:  Tara Van Meter (Softball)
Van Meter led team in with a .336 batting average and also finished first with eight homeruns, 34 RBIs and 56 hits. She won eight games on the mound and led team in innings pitched and strikeouts.

Co-Female Athlete of the Year:  Cory Riley (Women's Basketball)
Riley was named 2nd Team All-PacWest after leading theteam in scoring, steals and three-pointers made. She averaged 9.9 points, 2.7 assists and 2.2 steals for the season.

Male Athlete of the Year:  Tim Campeau (Lacrosse)
Campeau led the team with 71 points and 41 assists while finishing second in goals with 30. He holds the schools all-time records in career goals, assists and points. Campeau also finished first in Division II in assists and second in points

 

Sports Round-up and Team Awards

Men’s Soccer (10-9-1)

The NDNU men’s soccer team finished the season with a 10-9-1 record and finished second in the Pacific West with a 6-4 record.  The Argos won six of their final eight games to extend the team’s streak to ten straight seasons with a winning record.  Sheldon Steenhuis was one of seven Argonauts to earn All-Conference honors, taking home the PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year Award.  Andres Caballero and David Wulff also earned First Team honors while Emmanuel Vasquez and Dorian Virrueta were named to the Second Team.   Carlos Lopez and Sean Vogt received Honorable Mention accolades.

Offensive Player of the Year: Andres Caballero – named 1st Team All-PacWest...led team with nine goals and 19 points...added one assist....scored four game winning goals.
Defensive Player of the Year: named PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year...ranked second in conference with a 1.41 goals against average...recorded three shutouts.
MVP: David Wulff – named 1st Team All-PacWest...appeared in 15 games...helped anchor the Argos defense which ranked second in the PacWest.

Women’s Soccer (7-12-1)

The women’s soccer team took home fourth place in the PacWest with a 6-6    conference record.  The Argos finished the year 7-12-1 overall and won three of their final four games.  Four Argonauts received All-PacWest honors, led by Erin Morrison’s First Team Selection.  Catherine Ponce was named to the Second Team while Sally Olsson and Kristen Orlando were chosen as Honorable Mentions.

Offensive Player of the Year: Erin Morrison – named 1st Team All-PacWest...led conference with eight assists...scored four goals and finished with 16 points.
Defensive Player of the Year: Tareena Oakley - appeared in 17 games on defense...helped limit opponents to just 1.8 goals per game.
MVP: Erin Morrison – named 1st Team All-PacWest...led conference with eight assists...scored four goals and finished with 16 points.


Volleyball (11-19)

The NDNU women’s volleyball compiled a 7-7 conference record and earned fourth place in the PacWest.  The Argos finished 11-19 overall while ranking first in the conference in total digs and second in kills, assists and aces.  Lauren Quach earned Second Team All-Conference honors after finishing second in digs while Marissa Miller and Emily Evans ranked fourth and fifth respectively in total kills.

Coach's Awards: Shasta Millhollin – led team in assists with 611...finished second in aces while playing 103 games.
Most Inspirational: Sarah Perry - appeared in every game as a senior...finished third on the team with 241 kills and second in blocks with 75.
Co-MVP: Emily Evans – finished second on the team and fifth in the conference with 349 kills...third on the team in blocks with 63.
Co-MVP: Marissa Miller – led team and finished fourth in the PacWest with 351 kills...led conference with 59 aces...finished second on the team in digs with 417.

 

Men’s Cross Country

The men’s cross country team earned second place in the PacWest after finishing just two points behind HPU at the Conference Championships.  Javier Ceja and Erik Estrada received First Team All-Conference honors while Jose Alcala and David Santana were named to the Second Team. 

MVP: Jose Alcala – earned Second Team All-PacWest honors...finished eighth at the PacWest Championships.


Women’s Cross Country

The NDNU women’s cross country program competed in seven races this fall, capped off by a fourth place finish at the PacWest Championships.  Ashley Hughey earned Second Team All-Conference honors after finishing 12th.

MVP: Ashley Hughey – earned Second Team All-PacWest honors...finished 11th at the PacWest Championships...was the top NDNU finisher in every race.

Men’s Golf

The NDNU men’s golf team had another great season, placing in the top-10 in eight of their nine tournaments on the year.  The Argos finished fourth at the PacWest Championships with Ryan Sheffer finishing fourth individually.  Sheffer was named to the All-PacWest team while Mike Prescott and Kory Storer combined for seven top-20 performances on the year. 

Coach’s Award: Mike Prescott – second on the team with a 75.7 scoring average...led team with four top-20 performances...finished 7th at Otter Invitational.
Coach’s Award: Kory Storer – led team with a 75.3 scoring average...had three top-20 finishes.
MVP: Ryan Sheffer - earned All-PacWest honors...finished 4th at conference Championships...had a scoring average of 76.5..

Women’s Golf

The women’s golf team completed one of their most successful years to date, winning the CSU East Bay Invitational and placing in the top-5 in three other tournaments.  Brittany Carrera earned the school’s first ever individual title at the East Bay Invitational and also led the team with six top-10 finishes.  Kelly Ashton added four top-10 performances, three of which placed her in the top-5.

Coach’s Award: Jamie Zunini – had a scoring average of 89.4...recorded two top-20 finishes.
MVP: Brittany Carrera – led team with an 80.1 scoring average...earned the school’s first individual title at the CSU East Bay Invitational...had six top-10 finishes on the year.


Men’s Basketball (10-16)

The NDNU men’s basketball team finished the year with ten wins, including six in the PacWest.  The Argos defeated defending champions Grand Canyon twice and also downed Hawaii Pacific twice.  Chris Clock and Ryan Cooper both finished among the league leaders in points and three pointers while Dan Bergeron ranked fourth in rebounding.  Clock was named First Team All-Conference with Cooper being named to the Second Team.

Argonaut: Dan Bergeron – played in every game this season...averaged 9.6 points per game and led team with 7.8 rebounds per game.
Most Inspirational: Dustin Graul – appeared in 16 games...averaged five points, four rebounds and nearly a block a game.
Defensive:  Dustin Graul
Co-MVP: Ryan Cooper – named 2nd Team All-Pac West...Averaged 14.3 points and 3.9 assists, made 60 three pointers and shot 86% from the free throw line.
Co-MVP: Chris Clock – named 1st Team All-Pac West...led team with 14.9 points per game and 62 three pointers...set school record for career three pointers made.

Women’s Basketball (13-13)

The women’s basketball team enjoyed a very successful season, finishing 13-5 in PacWest play and placing second in the conference.  The Argos had a seven game winning streak during the season which included home sweeps of Dixie State and Hawaii Pacific.  Tanaia Keyes earned First Team All-PacWest honors with Cory Riley and Jennifer Dreessen receiving Second Team recognition.

Argonaut:  Cory Riley – named 2nd Team All-PacWest...led team in scoring, steals and three-pointers made...averaged 9.9 points, 2.7 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
Argonaut:  Jennifer Dreessen – named 2nd Team All-PacWest...averaged 9.0 points per game while leading the team in rebounds with 7.1 and field goal percentage at 53%.
Defensive Player of the Year: Tamar Savazian - started 12 games...averaged nearly a steal a game while being matched up against the opposing teams best guard.
Offensive Player of the Year: Cory Riley – named 2nd Team All-PacWest...led team in scoring, steals and three-pointers made...averaged 9.9 points, 2.7 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

Lacrosse (11-2)

The NDNU lacrosse team concluded the season with an 11-2 overall record and a 8-2 mark against NCAA teams.  The Argos won eight straight games at one point, including an eight goal victory over rival Whittier.  Tim Campeau led the team with 71 points while Brad Matzek set the school’s single season record with 46 goals.  Goalie Matthew Coric went 10-2 on the year with a 6.8 goals against average.  The Argos currently rank 10th on the Inside Lacrosse DII Power    Ratings.

Coach’s:  Cam Foss team captain started all 13 games as a midfielder...finished fourth on the team in goals, assists and points.
Defensive Player of the Year:  Cory Upshaw team captain started 12 games on defense...finished second on the team with 51 groundballs...scored three goals and one assist.
Defensive Player of the Year:  Brad Matzek set school record with 46 goals this season...finished second on the team in points with 68 and assists with 22.
MVP:  Tim Campeau led team with 71 points and 41 assists...second in goals with 30...schools all-time leader in goals, assists and points...first in Division II in assists and second in points.


Softball (22-30)

The NDNU softball team finished the year with a 22-30 record and placed fifth in the PacWest with nine wins.  The Argos tied for 2nd place at the Best of the West Invitational to open the season and pulled off an impressive sweep over fifth ranked Humboldt State in March.  Tara Van Meter led the team with a .366 batting average and eight homeruns while being named PacWest Pitcher of the Week twice.  Cierra Keeney won ten games on the season to lead the team.

Hustle:  Milana Jordan – appeared in 41 games and made 33 starts...finished with seven hits and four runs.
Hustle: Tanya Huson – started every game at shortstop...hit .312 out of the leadoff spot...led team with 38 runs, 15 doubles and 17 walks.
Pitcher: Cierra Kenney – went 10-8 on the season with a 4.14 ERA in 116 innings pitched...recorded two shutouts and led the team with 12 complete games.
MVP: Tara Van Meter – led team in with a .336 batting average...finished first with eight homeruns, 34 RBIs and 56 hits...won eight games on the mound and led team in innings pitched and strikeouts.

Tennis

The tennis team completed their first full season of Division II competition with 14 matches.  Ashley Wilson led the team with two individual wins and a doubles victory while Katelyn Mills and Lauren Quach also earned one win each.

Most Inspirational: Lauren Quach - appeared in 10 matches this season...finished with one singles and one doubles victory.
MVP: Ashley Wilson - appeared in all 14 matches...led team with two singles wins and one doubles victory.
