Argos Hold Off Urban Knights

February 7 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team prevailed 74-71 over Academy of Art in a very close, hard fought battle. The Argos got back on the winning track, improving to 2-8 in PacWest play thanks to 47% shooting and 17 made free-throws.

NDNU came out of the gates strong, taking an 11-5 advantage after Jeff Ford and Tyler Fricke combined for nine points. The Urban Knights quickly came back with seven straight points and eventually went ahead by seven with 8:24 remaining in the half. The Argos regained the lead towards the end of the half with an 11-2 run and went into the break ahead 36-31.

Academy of Art came out quick in the second half with seven straight points to retake the lead. However, the Argos kept battling a pulled ahead by nine after back-to-back threes by Cheynne Lishman capped off a 12-2 run. Keith Davis took over for AAU, scoring 18 points in the half, including 13 straight to keep the visitors close.

The Urban Knight chipped their deficit down to one in the closing minute on a 3-pointer by Willie Overton, but the visitors were forced to send NDNU to line. Ford calmly knocked down a pair of free-throws to push NDNU to a three point lead and give AAU one last chance with 20 second remaining. Overton then got three chances to send the game into overtime, but could not connect on any as the Argos went away victorious.

Fricke turned in one of the finest all around games in NDNU history, finishing with 19 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, five blocks and two steals. Ford scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half but knocked down the two biggest free-throws of the game. Nick Storment also reached double figures with ten while Arron Mollet, Trent Henwood and Lishman tacked on nine points each.

Davis poured in a game high 22 for the Urban Knights while Overton finished with ten.

NDNU is back in action next Tuesday when they host Chaminade at Walter Gleason Gym. BOX SCORE

 

Argos Fall to Hawaii Hilo

January 29 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team overcame a double digit deficit before falling to Hawaii Hilo 71-60. The Argos moved to 1-7 on the season in PacWest play while the Vulcans improved to 5-3.

The Argos started off the game hot, taking a 17-11 lead halfway through the first half. UHH responded quickly with a 16-2 run on four 3-pointers and led by eight. NDNU pulled within four in the final minute but the Vulcans ended the half with back-to-back threes to head into halftime ahead 38-28.

NDNU came out firing in the second half, scoring 19 of the first 24 second half points and taking a four point advantage. Arron Mollet scored 11 points in a three minute span to lead the Argonaut surge. The Vulcans came right back, scoring the next seven to take a three point advantage. Mollet answered with a game tying three pointer but the Vulcans used a 12-1 run to take the lead for good.

The Argos shot just 33% on two-pointers for the game, but stayed close on 9-17 from 3-point range. The Vulcans were red hot from long distance as well, hitting 8-16.

Mollet led all players with 23 points, 21 of which came in the second half. Tyler Fricke tacked on 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Josh Pettit added eight points.

Zach Wilde paced the Vulcans with 20 points and nine rebounds while Lavell Shipman poured in 19 off the bench.

NDNU is back in action Saturday night when they travel to San Rafael to take on Dominican. BOX SCORE

 

Argos Toppled by Hawaii Pacific

January 25 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team struggled to get baskets down the stretch as Hawaii Pacific turned a close game into a 58-49 victory. The Argos surrendered a second half lead to fall to 1-6 in conference play.

The game started out back and forth with HPU grabbing a 5-0 lead before a 12-2 run gave the Argos their biggest advantage. After a Victor Lee free-throw gave NDNU a 15-11 lead with 9:17 left, the Argos went nearly eight minute without a basket. The Sea Warriors capitalized on the cold shooting and took a 23-19 lead into halftime.

NDNU came out strong in the second half, quickly tying the game and taking a four point lead with 11 minutes remaining. HPU swung the momentum to take a 40-37 lead but were quickly answered by Jeff Ford’s game tying three with 8:09 left. Unfortunately for the Argos, that would be the last time they were close with HPU ripping off a 10-2 to take the lead for good.

Neither team shot well with NDNU hitting just 37% of their shots and HPU connecting on just 33%. However, the difference in the game was the 16 Argonaut turnovers and the 12-5 advantage the Sea Warriors had on the offensive glass.

Arron Mollett scored a game high 16 points on 5-8 shooting while Tyler Fricke added nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Royal Edwards and LaBrent Chappell paced three Sea Warriors in double figures with 14 points each.

The Argos look for revenge on Saturday when they take on Hawaii Hilo at 7:30 pm. The Argos dropped a double overtime heartbreaker to the Vulcans earlier this month in Hawaii. BOX SCORE

 

Argos Come up Short Against Dixie

January 22 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team fell shy of pulling off a double digit comeback, falling to Dixie State 71-60. The Argos drop to 1-5 in PacWest play with the loss while Dixie State moved to 3-1.

The game started off back-and-forth with each team grabbing the lead in the opening minutes. After Dixie started to put a little distance between them and the Argonauts, the home team battled back. Jeff Ford knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:32 left to give the Argos their biggest lead at four points but the Red Storm quickly answered. The visitors scored the half’s final 12 points to head into the break with a 35-27 advantage.

The second half started with the two teams scoring on seven straight possessions before the Argos chipped the deficit down to two. The Red Storm answered with a 10-0 run to push the margin back to 12 points. NDNU would not go away, responding with a 10-2 run to get within four in the closing minute. However, the Argos would not get any closer as Dixie converted eight of ten free-throws to end the game.

Jeff Ford finished with a game high 18 points to pace the Argos while Tyler Fricke tacked on 13.

Griffon Jones hit 9-11 shots for Dixie State to lead the Red Storm with 18 points while Solomon Jensen added 13 and Donovan Plunkett chipped in 11 off the bench.

Argos Suffer Loss at Hands of Antelopes

January 18 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball dream dropped their 2011 PacWest home opener to Grand Canyon 83-70. The Argos shot well on the night but missed several key free-throws while falling to 1-4 in conference play.

The game started out close with the team’s trading baskets to tie the score at 14-14. The Antelopes responded with ten straight points and went into the break ahead 35-29. The Argos shot 60% in the half but trailed thanks to nine turnovers.

The second half started out great for NDNU with the Argos scoring eight of the first ten points to tie the game at 37-37. However, once again GCU responded and pushed ahead with seven straight points. After the NDNU battled back to cut the deficit to two, the lead swelled to ten with five minutes remaining. The Argonauts would not get any closer as the lay-ups and free-throws stopped falling.

For the game, NDNU shot just 15-28 from the charity stripe while hitting 48% from the field.

Arron Mollet led all players with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Tyler Fricke turned in his best all-around game of his career, finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals. Nick Storment also reached double figures with 13.

Nick Witherill led five Antelopes in double figures with 18 points.

NDNU is back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Dixie State at 2:00 pm. BOX SCORE

 

Argos Take Down Hawaii Pacific

January 10 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team earned their first PacWest victory of the season with a 61-59 victory over Hawaii Pacific. The Argos improved to 3-11 on the season and 1-3 after their difficult four game road trip.

The Argos found themselves down small early but rebounded to take a five point lead late in the half. After the Sea Warriors took a 20-19 lead, Tyler Frick hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Argos a five point advantage. HPU cut it two in the closing seconds but a three by Cheynne Lishman pushed the lead back to five.

The Argos built to lead to seven in the second half but a 14-1 run swung the game and gave the Sea Warriors a seven point llead with 12:11 remaining. NDNU responded with a 10-0 run to retake the lead. The game stayed close with HPU tying the score at 56-56 with just under three minutes left. However, the Argos scored the next five points to take the lead and never llook back.

NDNU shot just 42% for the game but made 11 3-pointers in 20 attempts to down HPU. The Sea Warriors meanwhile shot 39% from the field and hit only two from long range.

Jeff Ford led all players with 18 points and five assists while Fricke added 14 points and five assists. Arron Mollet also reached double figures with 11.

The Argos are back in action next Tuesday when they host Grand Canyon at 7:30 pm. BOX SCORE

 

BYU Hawaii Nips Argonauts 60-57

January 8 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team just missed a chance to force overtime in the final seconds, falling to BYU Hawaii 60-57. The Argos nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback, cutting a ten point deficit in the final minute to just two points. However, a pair of 3-point attempts did not connect and the Seasiders prevailed.

The first half was back and forth throughout with six ties and three lead changes in a low scoring period. The Argos shot just 33% from the field while BYUH hit at just a 20% clip. The Seasiders held a 9-3 free-throw advantage to cling to a 23-21 lead.

The Argos erased the deficit to start the second half, scoring the first four points and taking a two point advantage. After the Argos took a three point lead with 11:40 left the Seasiders started to make their move. The home team used a 13-4 run late in the game to lead by ten with 1:05 left.

NDNU would not go away, hitting eight free-throws over the next 21 second to cut the lead to just two points with 39 second remaining. After a made free-throw by BYUH the Argos had a chance to tie in the final seconds. However, Jeff Ford’s 3-pointer was off the mark and the follow up three by Arron Mollet also missed to preserve the Seasiders win.

Ford and Mollet paced the Argos with 14 points while Tyler Fricke and Nick Storment added 13 and 10 respectively. BOX SCORE

 

 

Late Rally Fall Short as Argos Drop Game to Chaminade

January 6 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team nearly erased a 20 point deficit before falling to Chaminade 84-77. The Argos fell to 0-2 in PacWest play with the loss but gave themselves a chance despite a large second half deficit.

The game started off close with the teams trading the lead several times. After the Argos tied to score at 23-23, Chaminade scored the next seven to take the lead permanently. The Silver Swords lead pushed to as many as ten in the first before entering halftime up by seven.

The beginning of the second half was all Chaminade as the home team pushed their margin to as many as 20 with 14:03 left in the game. However, after NDNU chipped the lead down to 13, Nick Storment bookended 3-pointers by Tyler Fricke and Victor Lee with a pair of jumpers to cut the deficit to just three points. That would be as close as the Argonauts would get as the Silver Swords pushed the lead back to 11.

The Argos shot 42% for the game whole Chaminade hit at a 50% clip. The Silver Swords also made 10-18 from 3-point range while the Argos stayed close with a season low seven turnovers.

Arron Mollet led the Argos with 18 points while Nick Storment just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Jeff Ford and Tyler Frick added 14 points apiece. BOX SCORE

 

Argos Drop Heartbreaker to Hawaii Hilo

January 4 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team saw a victory slip through their fingers as they fell in double overtime to Hawaii Hilo 90-88. The Argos had a chance to put the game away in regulation but a missed opportunity led to game tying free throw to force overtime.

The game was back and forth throughout, featuring 19 ties and 15 lead changes. The Argos started off strong, taking a lead early on and building it to as many as seven in the first half. UHH used eight straight points to retake the lead before the game went into the break tied at 31-31.

The Vulcans came out strong in the second half taking a six point lead late in the half before the Argos battled back and knotted the game once again at 64-64. The two teams traded leads for the remainder of regulation with NDNU going ahead 71-70 on a pair of free throws by Arron Mollet. After the Argos got the ball back with four seconds left, Mollet missed a dunk and UHH forward Zach Wilde was fouled on the rebound. Wilde sunk one of two free throws to tie the game and force overtime.

The first overtime was back and forth again with Mollet once again giving the Argos a late lead with a jumper in the final minute. With a one point lead, NDNU fouled Justin Smith who made one of two free throws to once again tie the game and force a second overtime.

IIn the second overtime, Mollet connected on a jumper to tie the score at 87-87 with 30 second left and was fouled. He calmly made the free throw to give NDNU a one point lead. Smith responded with a jumper of his own with 18 seconds left to give UHH the lead for good.

Mollet poured in a career high 26 points and added eight rebounds and four assists. Tyler Frick added 22 points and nine rebounds while Nick Storment added 14. Jeff Ford and Cheynne Lishman also reached double figures with 11 points apiece.

Smith scored a game high 34 points and added nine rebounds for UHH while Wilde scored 19 points and 16 rebounds.

The Argos will look to rebound on Thursday when they travel to Honolulu to take on Chaminade. BOX SCORE

 

Big Second Half Lifts NDNU over Menlo

December 31 – Jeff Ford scored a career high 30 points as the NDNU men’s basketball team exploded for 55 second half points on their way to a 89-70 victory over Menlo.

The Argos started off slow, trailing for the majority of the first half before coming on at the end. With the score tied 8-8, Menlo rattled off seven straight points to take a 15-8 lead with 11:28 left. NDNU responded with seven straight of their own and took the lead at the 20-18 with just under eight minutes remaining. They built the lead to as many as seven before a Carlos Monroy cut the deficit to three with a 3-pointer from beyond half court as the buzzer sounded.

Turnovers were the key to the first half as the visitors committed 12 while shooting 44% from the field. The Argos shot 52% for the half and committed eight turnovers and led 34-31 despite being outrebounded 17-9.

The Argos exploded in the second half, running away with the game thanks to some precision shooting. For the half, NDNU shot 68% and outscored the Oaks 55-39. After a Menlo bucket cut the lead to one, the Argos scored the game’s next eight points to push the lead to double figures and never looked back. NDNU pushed the margin to as many as 20 after Jeff Ford converted his fifth basket and the foul of the game.

NDNU finished the game shooting a season high 60% while the Oaks hit at a 40% clip. The Argos also made 23 of 35 from the line and 6 of 13 from beyond the arc.

Ford took over in the second half, scoring 21 of his career high 30 points and hitting 6-8 from the field and 9-10 from the line. For the game he shot 10-14 from the floor and 10-11 from the charity stripe. Arron Mollet added 13 points while Tyler Fricke and Trent Henwood tacked on ten each.

Ford became the first Argonaut player to score 30 since Martin Castro poured in 30 against Holy Names in 2002.

The Argos are back in action on Tuesday when they kick off the Hawaii road trip with a game against Hawaii Hilo. BOX SCORE

Argos Topple William Jessup 73-67

December 8 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team got on track with a 73-67 victory over William Jessup. The Argos shot over 50% for the game and made 16-20 free throws to pick up their first victory of the season.

The game started off back-and-forth with each team grabbing the lead three times and battling to four ties in the opening minutes. After WJU took an 18-15 lead, the Argos rattled off seven straight points to take the lead back and would never trail again. The Warriors managed to tie the game twice but NDNU took a 35-32 lead into the break.

The second half started out with the both teams swapping baskets before the Argos reeled off a 17-1 run to bust the game wide open. However, William Jessup would not go away, whittling the lead down to four with just under five minutes remaining. The Argos bounced back, scoring the next four points to give a cushion.

The Argos made 26 of 50 field goals, including 5-10 from 3-point range. They also made 80% from the line, outscoring the visitors 16-6 from the charity striple.

Arron Mollet poured in a career high 24 points on 10-12 shooting. Mollet hit his first six shots and added four blocks. Nick Storment came off the bench to score 14 points while Jeff Ford added ten points and four assists. Tyler Fricke tacked on eight points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Damal Neil and Preston Bramow paced the Warriors with 13 points each.

The Argos are back in action Saturday afternoon when they head across the Bay to take on CSU East Bay at 3:00 pm. BOX SCORE

 

Argos Suffer Loss to Gators

November 27 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team suffered their fourth consecutive loss, falling to San Francisco State 76-59. The Argos struggled with their shot, hitting just 2 of 15 from 3-point range, while SFSU made nine in 22 attempts.

NDNU started the game off with a pair of free-throws, the Gators responded with a 12-0 run and never trailed again. The Argos cut the lead to three with an eight point run of their own to make the score 16-13. However, that would be as close as the home team would get as SFSU built their margin to as many at 16 in the opening half.

The start of the second half was all San Francisco State with Nefi Perdomo scoring the Gators first 12 points as the advantage stretched to 26. The Argos continued to work, earning 15 trips to the foul line in the second half but could only pull within 17.

NDNU shot 41% for the game, attempting just 39 shots while they solid from the free-throw line. The Argos hit 25-33 from the charity stripe, including 13 of 15 in the second half.

Jeff Ford scored a tournament high 25 points on 7 of 10 shooting and was 10 of 11 from the line. Aaron Mollet and Erik Hartvigson tacked on eight points each off the bench.

Perdomo paced the Gators with 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Phoenix O’Rourke added 12 points on four 3-pointers.

The Argos are back in action on December 4 th when they travel to Davis to take on Division I UC Davis. BOX SCORE

Argos Fall to UC San Diego on Opening Night of NDNU Thanksgiving Classic

November 26 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team dropped a defensive battle to UC San Diego 53-42 on the opening night of the 5 th NDNU Thanksgiving Tournament. Both teams played great on the ball defense limiting each other to below 40% shooting.

The game started off well for the Tritons, scoring eight of the first ten points to take an 8-2 lead. However, the Argos battled back to knot the game at 8-8 before UC San Diego rattled off seven straight points. The seven point spurt would prove to be all the cushion the Tritons would need as they never trailed again.

NDNU hung tough the rest of the half, cutting the lead to two in the final minute before entering half time down 24-20.

The second half once again started in the Tritons favor as they scored the first four points to take a double digit lead. The Argos did their best to stay close, pulling within four with 12 minutes left but UCSD built the lead back to double digits again.

NDNU once again fought back, closing within five in the final minutes but the Tritons put the game away with back-to-back baskets by Justin Bruce.

The Argos shot just 28% from the field for the game and hit just 1-11 from long distance. UC San Diego did not fair much better, hitting 35% of their attempts and making just one of nine 3-pointers.

Nick Storment led the Argos with 14 points while Jeff Ford finished with ten. Tyler Frick grabbed a game high ten rebounds.

Brue led all scored with 16 points and added eight rebounds.

The Argos are back in action tomorrow night when they close out the Thanksgiving Classic with a game against San Francisco State at 5:00 pm. BOX SCORE

 

BYU Hawaii Runs Past Argos

March 6 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team struggled to find their offense in the season finale as they fell to BYU Hawaii 81-55.  The Argos shot 40% for the game, but made just 8 of 27 field goals (29%) in the first half.

The Seasiders were the opposite as they connected at 54% in both the first and second to run away with the game.  After the Argos scored their first basket to make the score 4-2, BYUH rattled off a 22-4 run to go ahead by twenty.  The margin would dip below 20 momentarily before the Seasiders scored twelve unanswered to push their lead to 30.

The Argos offense picked up in the second half, outscoring the visitors 38-37 but the damage was already done.  Bennie Murray and Josh Malloy combined for 23 second half points as the Argos hit 48% of their attempts.

Murray led the team with 14 points, knocking down three 3-points while Chris Silzer and Nick Storment also reached double figures with 11 and 10 respectively.  Storment also grabbed a game high nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

Rory Patterson poured in a game high 19 to lead the Seasiders while Marques Whippy turned in an excellent all around game with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals. 

The Argos finished the season at 4-23 and went 2-14 in PacWest play.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Fall to Chaminade

March 4 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell to Chaminade 56-43.  The Argos stayed close for much of the first half, but a late Silversword run put the visitors ahead for good.

NDNU came out strong, using a Jeff Berridge 3-pointer and a Trent Henwood lay-up to take an early 5-2 lead.  After Chaminade scored the next seven, Berridge and Henwood combined for the next six to give NDNU an 11-9 advantage.   However, with the score tied at 16-16, the Silverswords broke the game open with ten straight points over a three minute period. 

The Argos trailed by ten at halftime and were able to pull within seven in the second half but were unable to get any closer.  NDNU shot 34% for the game while Chaminade connected at a 43% clip.  The visitors also held a 35-27 rebounding advantage.

Trent Henwood led the Argos with 13 points while Nick Storment added ten points and six rebounds.

Shane Hanson poured in a game high 16 points, 13 in the first half while Steven Bennett added 15 points and five assists.

The Argos close out the season when they take on BYU Hawaii on Saturday afternoon.  Saturday will also be Senior Day as the Argos will honor their four seniors; Chris Silzer, Andre Hayes, Jeff Berridge and Alex Raj.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Prevail over Academy of Art

February 22 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team completed the season sweep of Academy of Art with a 60-50 victory.  The Argos did most of their damage in the second half from the charity stripe as they outscored the Urban Knights 28-16 from the line.

NDNU started off hot, taking a commanding 17-5 lead early in the game after a 17-1 run.  The Argos continued to keep the double digit distance, leading 26-14 with just over four minutes remaining.  However, AAU got their offense going and closed the half on a 13-0 run to go into the break up by a point. 

The second half was back and forth for the first several minutes as the two teams were tied seven times and the lead changed hands four times.  The Argos blew the game open at the 6:45 mark when Josh Malloy scored nine straight points to put NDNU up 50-41.  Over that stretch Malloy made seven free throws and lay-up.  After Chris Silzer hit a pair of free throws to put NDNU up by 11, Malloy added another lay-up to cap off the 13 points spurt. 

Down the stretch, the Argos continued to make their free throws, hitting their final 22 free throws to keep the Urban Knights at a distance.

Malloy led all players with 17 points, shooting 13 of 13 from the line.  Silzer, Trent Henwood and Nick Storment each tacked on ten points while Jeff Berridge grabbed a game high ten rebounds. 

The Argos are back in action next Thursday when they take on Chaminade at Walter Gleason Gym.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Fall to Vulcans

February 7 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team closed out their four game Hawaii road trip with a 70-50 loss to Hawaii Hilo.  The Argos struggled defensively as the Vulcans connected at a 54% clip in the game.

The first half was close for the first eight minutes when a 6-0 NDNU run tied the game at 12-12.  However, the Vulcans got things going after their timeout by scoring the games next nine points.  The Argos whittled the margin down to two before heading into the break trailing by seven.

The Vulcans picked up where they left off in the second half, storming out to a 13-3 run and going ahead by 17.  UHH shot 56% in the half and made 11 of 12 free throws while extending their lead over 20. 

For the game, NDNU shot 38% and made just 11 of 21 free throws. 

Chris Silzer scored a game high 16 points while Nick Storment added ten points off the bench. 

The Argos are back in action Saturday evening when they head to San Francisco to take on Academy of Art at Kezar Pavilion.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Nipped by Chaminade

February 3 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team nearly pulled off the upset before falling to Chaminde 75-69.  The Argos led as late as five minutes remaining before a Silversword run sealed the game.

The first half was back and forth for the first few minutes before a 7-0 NDNU run gave the Argos a 15-7 advantage.  With just under seven minutes left the Argos led 21-19 but nine unanswered points by Chaminade gave the home team the lead.

The Argos shot 52% in the first half while the Silverswords hit at a 47% clip to take an eight point lead into the break.

Chaminade built their lead up to ten in the second before a 15-5 run by NDNU gave the Argos a 52-51 advantage.   After the two teams swapped baskets, the Silverswords broke the game open with an 11-1 run and never looked back. 

For the game, NDNU shot 46% from the field while Chaminade shot 44% but committed just six turnovers.

Chris Silzer scored a career high 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting and hit all three of his 3-point attempts.  Nick Storment added 14 points while Joshua Malloy finished with 11.

Steven Bennett poured in a game high 20 points while Matt Cousins tacked on 19 points and nine rebounds.  

The Argos are back in action on Friday night when they take on Hawaii Pacific.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Struggle in Loss to BYU Hawaii

February 1 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team struggled to get going as they fell to reigning PacWest champs BYU Hawaii 92-48.  The Argos shot 31% from the field while the Seasiders hit at a 69% clip. 

The Argos fell behind early as the Seasiders were on fire from long distance, hitting 9 of 11 in the first half.  They were nearly as good on 2-pointers as well, making 10 of 14 and shooting 76% from the field.

The second half was all BYUH as the home team scored 13 of the first 14 points to move their advantage over 30.  The Seasiders once again topped 60% from the field, shooting 63% for the second half. 

Bennie Murray led the Argos with 15 points while Chris Silzer had a game high four steals. 

The Argos are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Honolulu to take on Chaminade.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Fall to Dominican

January 29 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball could not overcome an early second half run as they fell to Dominican 70-59.  The Argos committed 19 turnovers while the Penguins had just seven.

The first half was back and forth the entire way as the two teams swapped leads five times.  The Argos started off strong, taking an early 11-8 advantage.  After Dominican claimed the lead at 18-17, NDNU rebounded with back-to-back buckets to retake a three point lead.   The Argos took their biggest lead of the game with just over two minutes left at 28-24 but the Penguins capped off the half with six straight points to lead 30-28 at the break.

Dominican came out strong in the second half, opening the period on a 13-2 run to push their margin into double digits.  The lead stayed around ten for much of the half before swelling to 15 with 5:33 left.  NDNU scored eight of the next ten points to cut the margin down to eight but that was as close as the Argonauts would come.

NDNU shot 41% from the field while their opponents hit at a 45% clip.  The Penguins also held a 25-13 advantage free throw advantage while the Argos held a 35-24 lead on the boards. 

Bennie Murray led the Argos with 21 points while Cheynne Lishman also reached double figures with 10. 

Austin Bryan scored a game high 28 points for Dominican and added four steals.

The Argos are back in action on Monday when they travel to Hawaii for a four game road trip.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Stumble Against Grand Canyon

January 16 – The Antelopes shot a scorching 56% from long range as they defeated the Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team 72-55.  The Argos dropped to 0-4 in PacWest play with the loss while Grand Canyon picked up their first win.

Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the first half with the game moving into the fifth minute without any points.  After a few swapped buckets, the score remained tied at 9-9 before a 12-2 GCU run pushed the visitors ahead.  The Argos did their best to remain close but headed into the break down 27-18.

The game was completely different in the second half as each team caught fire from the field.  The Antelopes shot a blistering 66% in the half while the Argos were nearly as good at 63%.  The big difference in the half was GCU’s shooting from 3-point range as they knocked down 6-9.

Grand Canyon used a 15-2 run in the middle of the second to push the game out of reach as their lead stretched over 20 points. 

Bennie Murray scored a team high 13 points and added four assists while Alex Raj and Joshua Malloy tacked on 12 and 10 respectively. Nick Witherill led all players with 16 points off the bench for GCU, including eight straight at one point in the second half. 

The Argos and Antelopes square off again next weekend when NDNU travels to Phoenix for the two schools final meeting of the season.  BOX SCORE

 

Dixie Runs Past Argos in Second Half

January 14 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team dropped their third straight conference game with an 83-66 defeat by Dixie State.  The Red Storm connected on 65% of their shots, including 68% in the first half to earn the victory.

The Argos stared off hot, making their first three shots and taking an 8-2 advantage.  The Red Storm answered right back with ten straight points and would never trail again.  NDNU kept it close, closing the first half with five straight Bennie Murray points to head to the break down just 36-33. 

After the teams swapped baskets for the first few possessions of the second, the Red Storm would rattle off nine straight points to bring their advantage to double digits.  The Argos did their best to remain close but Dixie State continued to make their shots and eventually brought their margin to 20. 

For the game, the Argos shot 49% and made nine 3-pointers while holding a 9-4 advantage on the offensive glass.  The Red Storm controlled the ball well, committing just nine turnovers and hitting 14-17 from the charity stripe.

Bennie Murray scored a game high 18 on 5-9 shooting and added five assists.  Cheynne Lishman added a career high 14 on 4-7 shooting from 3-point range. 

Four Red Storm reached double figures with Andy Palmer’s 17 leading the way.

The Argos are back in action Saturday evening when they take on Grand Canyon at 7:30 pm.  BOX SCORE

 

Sea Warriors Run Past NDNU

January 9 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team could not hold off the high flying Sea Warriors as they dropped to Hawaii Pacific 82-47.  The Argos struggled from the field, connecting on just 27% of their shots while their opponents shot 56%. 

The Sea Warriors built up a big lead early and never looked back, taking a 26-10 lead in the opening ten minutes.   The Argos followed with back-to-back buckets to drop it back to ten but HPU managed to take a 14 point lead into the break.

The second half was all Hawaii Pacific as the visitors used an 18-0 run to push their margin over 30.  For the game the Sea Warriors out rebounded the Argos by seven and racked up ten blocks.

Nick Storment led the Argos with 12 points while Trent Henwood and Bennie Murray combined for 21 points and 12 rebounds. 

Norman Wells poured in a game high 25 points, including the first ten points while shooting 11-15 from the field.  C.J Jackson added 12 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. 

The Argos are back in action next Thursday when they take on Dixie State at 7:30 pm.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Fall to Hawaii Hilo in Conference Opener

January 7 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team struggled to get their offense clicking as they dropped their PacWest opener to Hawaii Hilo 66-51.  The Argos shot just 33% from the field including 29% in the first half.

The Argos started fast with six of the first eight points before the Vulcans jumped ahead with a quick seven point spurt.  UHH continued to build their lead before a last second 3-pointer by Bryan Ngo gave the visitors a ten point lead at the break. 

NDNU failed to connect from 3-point range in the first, missing their nine attempts.  UHH on the other hand hit two of three from long distance and shot 43% overall.

The second half was all UHH to start as the Vulcans used an 11-1 run to lead by as many as 21.  However, the Argos got hot from long range and were able to cut the lead to nine after back-to-back threes by Jeff Berridge and Josh Malloy.  The Vulcans would rebound and push their margin back to double figures and seal the game.

Malloy just missed a career high with 18 points while connecting on four 3-pointers. 

Justin Smith did most of the damage for the Vulcans with 24 points on 11-17 shooting while Bryan Ngo added 13 points.

The Argos continue PacWest play on Saturday when Hawaii Pacific comes to Belmont for a 7:30 pm tip.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Fall to Somona State

December 15 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team could not hold their halftime lead as they fell to Sonoma State 79-67.  The Seawolves shot a blistering 74% in the second half and hit all 11 free throws to outscore the Argos 48-34 after the break.

The Argos started off strong, scoring the first four points before Sonoma State rattled off ten unanswered.  After the Seawolves extended their lead to 16-10, NDNU scored the next 13 and took a 23-16 advantage.  SSU whittled the lead down twice before a Bennie Murray lay-up with five seconds left gave the Argos a 33-31 halftime lead.

Once again, NDNU opened the half with four straight points before a Seawolf run of ten gave the visitors the lead back.  This time, Sonoma State would not look back, hitting 17 of 23 second half shots to build their lead to as many as 15. 

The Argos shot 48% for the game but made just 16 of 25 from the charity stripe while the Seawolves rebounded from a poor shooting first half to finish at 55%.  Sonoma State also went 18-19 from the free-throw line and hit 7 of 14 threes. 

Bennie Murray and Nick Storment led the Argonauts in scoring with 19 points apiece.  Murray added a team high six rebounds while Andre Hayes and Trent Henwood combined for 14 points.

The Seawolves got 39 points from their bench with Sterling Arterberry leading the way with 19 points.  He made 7-8 shots and all five free throws.  Steven Pratt and Mike Nelson added 18 and 16 respectively while Chris Weber finished with 14 points and six assists.

The Argos are back in action this weekend when they travel to Humboldt State for the Lumberjacks tournament.  BOX SCORE

 

Argonaut Comeback Falls Short in Loss to CSU Maritime

December 2 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team nearly rallied back from a 15 point first half deficit before falling in the final minute to CSU Maritime 69-66.

The Argos struggled defensively in the first half as the Keelhaulers connected on 8-13 threes and shot 52% from the field.  Michael Weimer hit four 3-pointers on his way to 17 first half points.  CSU Maritime led 24-20 with 6:30 left and extended their lead to 15 at the break with a 16-5 run to close out the half.

The second half was a different story as the Argos chipped away at the visitor’s lead.  The Argos shot 68% in the second half to help close the gap but still trailed 64-55 with 3:41 remaining.  After a 3-pointer by Josh Malloy, he came up with a steal and fed Bennie Murray who cut the lead to three.  NDNU pulled within two with a free-throw but a jumper by Andrew Medeiros with 39 second left pushed the advantage back up to four.  Alex Raj’s dunk with 1.9 second left pulled NDNU within one but that was as close as the Argonauts would get. 

NDNU had four players in double figures, led by Nick Storment’s 17 points.  Murray added 14 with all but one coming in the second half.  Andre Hayes and Josh Malloy each set season highs with 11 and 10 points respectively.  Each added three steals while Malloy dished out a game high five assists.

Weimer finished with 24 points while Haven Piatt tacked on 14 to pace the Keelhaulers.

The Argonauts are back in action on December 12th when they face San Francisco State on the road.  BOX SCORE

 

Argos Fall to Western Oregon, Dominican Wins Second Straight

November 28 – The second day of the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Classic saw Dominican win their second game in as many days as well as Western Oregon toppling NDNU in the nightcap.

The Penguins once again used their explosive offense to run past their opponents, winning 74-60 against CSU East Bay.  Dominican used a 19-2 run over the end of the first half and beginning of the second to put enough distance between them and the Pioneers.  For the game, the Penguins connected on 54% of their shots while limiting CSUEB to 39% from the field and 31 turnovers.

Xander McNally nearly recorded a triple double to lead Dominican, finishing with 11 points, nine assists and nine steals.  Mark Lewis led the Penguins with 15 points while Austin Bryan and Killian Larson also reached double figures with 13 and 11 points respectively.

Mark Samuels and Demitrius Owens paced the Pioneers with ten points each.  BOX SCORE

The second game featured host Notre Dame de Namur taking on Western Oregon for the second time in as many weeks.  Once again, the Wolves prevailed, using a big first half run to storm past the Argos.  After NDNU scored five of the first seven points, WOU went on a 31-4 run and never looked back.  For the game, the Argos were outshot 51% to 36%, including a 55% to 21% advantage in the first half.

Matt Schmidt scored a game high 19 points to lead the Wolves while Tarance Glenn and Blair Wheadon added 12 apiece.

Bennie Murray led the Argonauts with 16 points and eight rebounds with Nick Storment also reaching double figures with ten points.  BOX SCORE

Penguins and Pioneers Prevail on Day 1

November 27 – Cal State East Bay and Dominican were the big winner on Day 1 of the NDNU Thanksgiving Classic as they each won their respective games.  CSUEB toppled host Notre Dame de Namur 71-64, with some clutch free throw shooting preserving the victory while the Penguins used a big second half to storm past Western Oregon 83-69.

In the first game, Dominican upset WOU to earn their first Division II victory.  The game remained tight throughout the first half with the Penguins taking a 39-36 lead into the break.  However, DU scored the first ten points of the second to build their lead to 13 and never look back.  The Wolves cut the lead to four with just over six minutes remaining but the Penguins used another run to put the game away. 

Austin Bryan scored a game high 21 points while Mark Lewis and Alex Ward tacked on 18 apiece to pace the Penguins.  Xander McNally added on 4 points, 8 assists, 5 points and 4 steals.   Matt Schmidt led the Wolves with 16 points while Rico Myles added eight points and 18 rebounds.  BOX SCORE

The second featured a back-and-forth contest for much of the first half before a big run pushed the Pioneers ahead.  The Argos jumped ahead 21-14 after a quick five point spurt before East Bay scored the next nine to take a two point lead.  After stretching the lead to five in the with two minutes remaining Bennie Murray closed the half with five points to send the game into halftime tied at 27-27.  The second half featured a lot more scoring as the Pioneers connected at a 54% clip while NDNU connected on five 3-pointers and 14 free-throws. 

The Pioneers used a ten point run at the beginning of the second half to turn a five point deficit into a five point advantage.  From there on out, CSU East Bay never trailed as NDNU tried to chip away but could not catch up after the visitors connected on 11-12 free-throws. 

Murray finished the game with a tournament high 24 points on 8-16 shooting.  He hit three 3-pointers, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists.  Trent Henwood added ten points while Chris Silzer finished with nine.  BOX SCORE

The Classic continues tomorrow with CSU East Bay and Dominican meeting at 5:00 pm and Western Oregon and NDNU playing at 7:00 pm. 

 

Argos Topple Pacific Union in Season Opener

November 16 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team opened up their 2009-10 season with a 76-69 victory over Pacific Union.  The Argos shot lights out from the field, connecting on 55% of their field goal attempts to erase a first half deficit. 

The Argos found themselves down early despite hitting over half of their attempts.  After NDNU took a 13-12 lead, the Pioneers rattled off a 14-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 26-17.  The Argos cut the Pacific Union lead to three going into halftime. 

The Pioneers started hot in the second half, extending the lead to six points with 13:57 remaining.  However, NDNU quickly responded with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to retake the lead and never look back.  Pacific Union did their best to stay close but Bennie Murray’s 3-pointer with 2:57 left pushed the NDNU margin to 11.

The Argos shot 59% in the second half, including hitting 5-9 from behind the arc to pull away from the Pioneers. 

Murray led NDNU with 19 points and eight rebounds, hitting 8 of 11 from the field and three of five from 3-point range.  Nick Storment and Josh Malloy also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. 

Brandon Monty scored a game high 22 points and added six assists for the Pioneers while Kenny Penn, Kameron Barnes and Aren Rennacker also reach double figures. 

The Argos are back in action this weekend when they travel to Western Oregon to play a pair of games.  BOX SCORE

 

Murray Named Preseason All-PacWest

October 28 – Notre Dame de Namur sophomore guard Bennie Murray was selected to the Pacific West Preseason All-Conference Team.  The Argos were picked to finish seventh in the conference with BYU Hawaii chosen as the front runner.

Murray (Fairfield, CA/Will C. Wood HS) earned All-PacWest Honorable Mention as a freshman last year after leading the Argonauts in scoring with 12.5 points per game and three pointers made with 53.  His 1.97 three-pointers made per game ranked seventh in the conference.

Murray was the top freshman scorer in the West Region while finishing 12th in the PacWest in scoring.  He reached double figures 21 times and averaged 15.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 threes over the final nine games.  Murray was also named NDNU Freshman of the year for his efforts and is the youngest player on this season’s preseason squad that features five seniors and a junior. 

This marks the third straight year that NDNU has placed a player on the preseason All-Conference team with Dan Bergeron (2008-09) and Ryan Cooper (2007-08) earned the previous accolades.

Lucas Alves was named PacWest Preseason Player of the Year after winning the conference’s top honor last season while BYU Hawaii was the unanimous choice to win the PacWest.

 

NDNU Men’s Basketball Gives Back to the Community

October 1 – On each of the past two Friday afternoons, the Notre Dame de Namur men’s basketball team travelled down to Milpitas to hold a basketball camp for the 120 6th graders at Pomeroy Elementary School.

The Argonauts players and coaches ran a five hour camp over the two days, leading the students in drills such as dribbling, passing and shooting.  The students also ran drills with the NDNU players and received autographs from all of the Argonauts.
