Wood star signs with DII program

Bennie Murray doesn't see himself struggling to transition from center to guard.
Early results support the Will C. Wood High School senior, who played bigger than his 6-foot-4 frame with the Wildcats, but may have to play smaller in college at Notre Dame De Namur University in Belmont.
Murray signed a letter of intent last week to play at the Division II school.
"I had to use him on the inside a lot, but I think he can play outside," said Wood head coach Mark Wudel. "He certainly showed that he could in the Optimist Game."
Murray was the Most Valuable played in the Sacramento area all-star game in March, scoring 20 points and dishing out eight assists.
That came on the heels of his senior season with the Wildcats. Murray averaged a team-high 15.9 points per game to lead Wood to a 24-5 record, 12-3 in Monticello Empire League games.
Notre Dame De Namur may not post those kind of win-loss numbers just yet. The Argonauts were 10-16 last winter, 6-12 in the Pacific West Conference.
"It's a great opportunity for me. They just went to Division II, and I want to help them make something of their school. It's a big challenge, and I like challenges."
Murray also likes to play, and he may get a chance to do so right away in the Bay Area. He is one of six incoming freshmen who could see action.
"The coach can move me around, but I'll probably be point guard or (shooting) guard," Murray said. "It's going to be a little different, but I think playing down low at Wood helped me with my versatility. If I have a smaller guard on me, I can post him up."
Murray has plenty of confidence, but he also knows he has some work to do.
"The biggest thing for me I have to get better at coming off screens and just shooting the ball," he said. "I can get my shot off the dribble, but I have to work on just the catch-and-shoot."
He also will hit the weight room, and already has been sent a workout program by the Notre Dame coaching staff.
"I want to get a lot stronger ... upper-body strength," he said. "I've been practicing a lot. I want to get better, stronger and faster."
