Commencement Information

Academic Attire (Graduating Candidates)

Caps and gowns are required for all graduating students participating in the Commencement ceremony. Regalia is available for sale in the bookstore after March 26th. Prices are as follows:

  • Undergraduate: cap, gown, and tassel - $46.00
  • Graduate: cap, gown, hood, and tassel - $98.00

On-campus parking passes, for graduates only, and tickets are available in the Student Life and Leadership Office in the Campus Center. Please wear low-heeled shoes, as the ceremony will be held on an athletic field. The weather conditions may be cool, windy and/or damp, so please dress appropriately.

Alcoholic Beverages

University policy prohibits the possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages at the Commencement ceremonies.

Announcements and Class Rings

Announcements and class rings can be purchased anytime on-line at or at Grad Finale on April 1 and 2.


The Commencement ceremony begins promptly at 9:00am and is approximately two hours in length, depending on the number of graduates from year to year. Graduates are seated within their school. Master's degree students are in front of the bachelor's degree students within each school. Graduates are not seated in alphabetical order, but typically will sit with their friends from their particular program.  Students are required to stay for the full duration of Commencement.

Seating is first-come, first-serve for guests.  All guests will need a ticket for entry.

The Koret field is an artificial turf field and generates additional heat from the sun.  Students and guests are encouraged to layer their clothing and stay hydrated prior to and during the ceremony.  It is not advised to bring children or guests who may have medical conditions that could have adverse reactions to the sun or heat.

Family and Friends

All guests must have a ticket to enter the Commencement ceremony. Please let your guests know the weather may be hot, cool, windy and/or damp, and that the ceremony will be held on an athletics field. Low-heeled shoes are advised.

The gates at the athletics field will not be open for seating until 8:00 a.m.

Family and friends wishing to take photographs of graduating candidates are asked to do so either before or after the ceremonies. This will help alleviate congestion around the stage during the ceremonies.


Graduates should arrive on campus and report to the high school by 8 a.m. in order to get dressed, receive instructions and assemble for the Commencement ceremony. Graduates need to report to Notre Dame High School with their cap, gown and hood. They should bring their own safety pins and bobby pins to use with the hood and cap. Graduates will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony without their cap and gown.

Please leave personal belongings with family, there will not be any place to store personal belongings.

Take care of your graduation needs in a one-stop shop. Get your graduation tickets, parking pass, and academic regalia. Announcements, rings, and diploma frames can also be ordered. Representatives from the Alumni Office, Commencement Committee, Bookstore and Career Center will also be there to answer any questions.

If you cannot attend Grad Finale, you can purchase your cap, gown and diploma frame at the Bookstore, pick up your tickets and parking permit in the Student Life and Leadership Office and order announcements online at

On-campus parking will be limited to one car per graduate. The graduate must present his or her parking pass upon entering the University's main entrance. On-campus parking passes, for graduates only, are available in the Student Life and Leadership Office in the Campus Center.

Carpooling is strongly encouraged.

All guests must park at the Oracle parking lot at 10 Twin Dolphin Drive in Redwood Shores. To reach Oracle, take 101 and exit at Ralston Avenue. Follow the signs toward Marine World Parkway. At the second light, turn right onto Twin Dolphin Drive, and turn right into Lagoon Drive (Main Entrance).

Shuttle service will be provided from Oracle to campus beginning at 7:15 a.m. on the day of Commencement. We encourage you and your guests to arrive early. Please be patient, there may be delays. The shuttle will operate during the Commencement exercises.

The shuttles will resume at the end of the ceremony to return guests to the parking facilities at Oracle. They will run for an hour after the ceremony has ended.

For those with legal handicapped parking permits, parking will be available at the NDNU Theatre and Notre Dame High School, which are adjacent to the athletics field.

Parking will not be available in the neighborhood surrounding Notre Dame de Namur University. Illegally parked cars will be towed at the owner's expense.


Grad Images will photograph graduates receiving their diplomas. Photo proofs will be emailed directly to each student approximately two weeks after graduation, to the NDNU student email address. For more information, go to or call 1-800-261-2576.

Approximately eight (8) tickets will be given to each graduate, along with one on-campus parking pass. Tickets can be picked up at Grad Finale on April 1 and 2, and Student Life and Leadership in the Campus Center after Grad Finale. The graduate will not need a ticket.
