Diversity Speaker Series: Dismantling Systemic Racism

Dismantling Systemic Racism

The Diversity Speaker Series was developed for Notre Dame de Namur University and Belmont community to address and provide dialogue regarding systemic racism. Through concrete action resulting from ongoing examination, analysis and dialogue, NDNU will strive to become a model of a fully integrated, inclusive university in which all campus constituents experience the support and the values of a just society.

These events will create a larger and more public forum for the discussion of dismantling systemic racism. Our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the Belmont community will be exposed to knowledgeable, well respected, and experienced individuals that can inspire and motivate change.

Angela Davis is the author of eight books and has lectured throughout the United States as well as in Europe, Africa, Asia,
Australia, and South America. In recent years a persistent theme of her work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are the most affected by poverty and racial discrimination.

Anthony D. Romero took the helm of the American Civil Liberties Union in September 2001, a week before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The air in lower Manhattan, where the nation’s preeminent civil-liberties organization is headquartered, was still thick with smoke when the administration began pressuring Congress to remove checks and balances on law-enforcement.

Romero also served for nearly five years as a Ford Foundation Program Officer for Civil Rights and Racial Justice and for two years at the Rockefeller Foundation, where he led a foundation review that helped to determine future directions in civil-rights advocacy. He sits on several not-for-profit boards and is a member of the New York State Bar Association.
