Center for Student Leadership
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; Not only plan, but also believe.”
— Anatole France
Mission Statement:
Based on NDNU’s mission of values-based learning, the Center for Student Leadership develops students’ talents and potential to be effective leaders in diverse and dynamic communities.
Background:
One of the central and traditional purposes of higher education is the preparation of individuals for positions of leadership. The mission of Notre Dame de Namur University reflects this purpose through an emphasis on the need for students to build “character, competence, and confidence for life and work” and on educational programs that “teach them what they need to know for life.” By providing students with opportunities to learn about and practice leadership skills, we can enhance the quality of campus life and prepare students for future leadership roles.
During Fall semester 2002, professionals from Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and the President’s Office, met to enhance and transform the current leadership initiatives into a broad based campus wide program. Through their efforts, they created the Center for Student Leadership.
For the purpose of this Center, leadership involves the ability to communicate, motivate, and delegate tasks effectively to diverse populations. Leaders must also have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to relate to a variety of people and circumstances. The goal of the Center will be to provide a forum for the development and discussion of these essential skills.
Program Goals:
- To create an environment that supports and promotes student leadership development.
- To connect the academic classroom experience with daily leadership roles and organizational activities.
- To provide an opportunity for the development and enhancement of leadership skills.
- To encourage student participation in NDNU and community leadership experiences.
- To promote interaction between students, faculty, staff and members of the community.
