Dr. Shadrack Msengi, a specialist in reading education, is originally from Tanzania. He studied at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania earning a B.A. in Linguistics and African Literature, also graduated from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in USA, with a MA in reading education. Dr. Msengi earned his doctorate in curriculum and instruction, also from UNI. He has worked extensively assessing reading problems, teaching, and supervising student teachers in a clinical setting both at UNI and around several community schools.
At Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), Dr. Msengi teaches such courses as Current Research and Practice in Literacy Education, Assessment-Based Instruction in Reading and Language Arts (Early, intermediate, and advanced learners), clinical Applications, I, II, and III (Early, intermediate, and advanced learners), and Foundations for Teaching English Learners. Dr. Msengi is affiliated with several professional organizations, including International Reading Association, Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages (TESOL), and Academic Institute Development (ADI). His research interest is home and school literacy connections. He recently published a research article: Family, Child, and Teacher perceptions of African American Adults Assistance to Young Readers (The School Community Journal, 15(1) 2007). He is currently conducting research on family, child, and teacher shared views regarding a child’s reading strength and needs.
