NDNU Brews Up Safe Halloween In The Tenderloin

Belmont, CA, October 21, 2010 — Hundreds of witches, wizards, superheroes, princesses and other critters will soon invade San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, candy buckets in hand, parents in tow, to embark upon an experience sure to remain in the memories of every child in attendance. Whether they want to have a sack race, try out a jumpy or march in the costume parade, there will be something for everyone at the 12th annual Halloween in the Tenderloin on October 29 from 4-7 p.m. at the Tenderloin Children’s Playground.

Volunteers from Notre Dame de Namur University’s Streetwise Sociology class, the Tenderloin Children’s Playground, the Boys and Girls Club and the SFPD will join together to create a safe and fun Halloween, complete with a pre-determined trick-or-treating route organized by local businesses and residents who have agreed to participate in handing out Halloween goodies. Also on the program are pie-eating contests, face painting and pumpkin carving, just to name a few. Games and donated prizes will be awarded throughout the afternoon. Hilton Hotels, a co-sponsor of the event, will provide food for all the little ghosts and ghouls.

NDNU professor Dr. Don Stannard-Friel’s Streetwise Sociology class of fifteen students has been meeting in the Tenderloin since September to prepare for the event. The class is structured to give students a firsthand look at the real and local issues of poverty, crime and homelessness. It also shows students how they have the power to positively affect the impoverished. The class has recruited volunteers from other campus groups and athletics teams to run the games and booths, hand out prizes and help the kids have a fun time.

“We hope to bring an awareness for the continued need to help people in challenged areas like the Tenderloin, the importance of reaching out, especially to children—our future, and inspiring them to hope and to follow their dreams, to achieve and have gratitude for one’s own personal circumstances,” says Anne Marie Barsi, a student in the class and volunteer for the event.

The Tenderloin Children’s Playground is located at 570 Ellis Street in San Francisco.  For more information, contact Kay Rodrigues, Playground Director of the Tenderloin Children’s Playground at (415) 292-2162 or Dr. Don Stannard-Friel at (650) 508-3770.
