Notre Dame De Namur University’s Argonaut Receives National Journalism Award
Belmont, CA, March 19, 2007 — The Argonaut, the student newspaper of Notre Dame de Namur University, took second place in the national Best in Show competition at the Associated Collegiate Newspaper Convention in Portland, OR March 11.
Editor-in-Chief Bianca Nery accepted the award at the convention which was sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press. She was joined at the convention by Managing Editor Jennifer Coleman, Arts and Entertainment Editor Val Adams, and Sports Editor Corazon Riley. Also taking part in the event was English faculty member Erik Oeverndiek, an editor emeritus of The Argonaut, and Michelle Carter, Argonaut adviser and communication faculty member.
“I'm proud of our newspaper, especially since we are second to a school that is ten times bigger than ours,” said Nery, referring to the first place win by Northeastern Illinois University’s newspaper The Independent. “We poured our hearts into it and it feels great to have our efforts recognized nationwide. We always knew we had a strong newspaper and now the whole country knows it.”
The staff submitted the Feb. 22 edition of The Argonaut for the competition. The newspaper has been honored by ACP in four of the last five years. Last year, the California College Media Association gave its general excellence award to The Argonaut as best college newspaper in the less than weekly category. The Argonaut staff will be traveling to Hearst Castle on the Central California Coast April 28 to participate in this year's CCMA awards ceremony.
