Jan Yanehiro To Address NDNU Graduates at Commencement, May 8
Belmont, CA, April 20, 2010 — Emmy award winning broadcast journalist Jan Yanehiro will address the 400 members of the Notre Dame de Namur University graduating class on how to “rewrite the rules” when she delivers the keynote speech during commencement ceremonies at NDNU’s Koret Field on Saturday, May 8 at 10 a.m.
Yanehiro, an innovator in television news, was the original host of KPIX TV’s “Evening Magazine”, which pioneered the TV-magazine format. She has also hosted “Appraise It!” on HGTV, as well as “Resettlement to Redress”, a documentary on the Japanese-American experience after World War II. She has co-authored three books: “Having a Baby (1984) and “After Having a Baby” (1988) and “This Is Not the Life I Ordered, 50 Ways to Keep Your Head Above Water When Life Keeps Dragging You Down.” (2007).
“Jan Yanehiro has been rewriting the rules for women in broadcasting and for the industry itself for most of her professional career,” said NDNU President Judith Maxwell Greig. “We are pleased that she has chosen to spend a day with our graduates and share her experience.”
Yanehiro is currently the director of the School of Multi Media Communications at Academy of Art University in San Francisco and president of Jan Yanehiro, Inc. She serves on the Board of Directors at Bank of Marin. Yanehiro also maintains an active interest in the community, as a board member of Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation; Center for the Pacific Rim, University of San Francisco; and National Board of Visitors, Fresno State University. She is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association, National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Yanehiro received her B.A. in Journalism from CSU Fresno in 1970. She has received numerous Emmys for her work, and was inducted into the Academy of Television and Radio Hall of Fame in New York City. She received the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award and is a 2003 Silver Circle Inductee of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She has been named a Woman of Distinction by the Girls Scouts of America and is an Outstanding Alumnus of CSU Fresno. Jan has three children: Jaclyn, Jenna, J.B. Zimmerman, and three stepchildren: Meredith and Christopher Eves and Laura Wilkinson.
