Notre Dame de Namur University Reprises “Earth Dance” to Raise Funds for Dorothy Stang Center
Belmont, CA, January 5, 2010 — Notre Dame de Namur University will host a repeat performance of the NEW GROUND Theatre/Dance Company’s production of “Earth Dance” as a fund raiser for NDNU’s Dorothy Stang Center for Social Justice and Community Engagement in the NDNU Theatre on January 8 and 9 at 7:30 pm.
“Earth Dance” premiered in August under the artistic direction of Coleen Lorenz who is also on the faculty of both Notre Dame High School and NDNU and the technical direction of Will Springhorn Jr., a member of the NDNU Theatre faculty. The production, which combines theatre, dance, media, aerial artistry, voice, and live music received praise for its choreographic and media ingenuity. The story line has a strong humanitarian and environmental message and focuses on the struggles of an “average Joe” entering a dream called life.
“It is full of twists, turns, and surprises,” said Ms Lorenz. “We keep believing we can win, that our egos can outrun, outwit, and outsmart, that our struggles exist on the outside until one day we realize that our struggles are really inside and nowhere else.
She also noted that five of the featured professional performers are dance minor graduates from NDNU, and nine of the apprentice, “combat”, and professional dancers are current students or alumni of the NDHS dance program. Others in the company include professional dancers & performance artists from the Bay Area. “It is an honor to be asked to perform again; we are all very excited about the January benefit performance,” Adam Ellison who plays “Average Joe” and is an NDNU Theatre Major/Dance Minor graduate.
Ticket prices are $20 for General Seating and $10 Student/Senior Rate with ID.
