Argos Finish Third in PacWest Commissioner’s Cup
Belmont, CA, May 1, 2008 — The Notre Dame de Namur athletics program capped off another successful year in the Pacific West Conference with a third place finish in the inaugural Commissioner’s Cup.
The PacWest Commissioner’s Cup is the all-sports championship started this year to honor the top athletic program in the league. The PacWest currently sponsors 10 conference sports. Schools are awarded points based upon their order of finish in the conference schedule in the sports of soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball, while a championship competition is held in cross country, tennis and golf to determine final league standings.
Teams receive points based upon that finish, with the conference champion earning seven, the runner-up getting six, the third-place team grabbing five, and the fourth-place squad claiming four. Teams finishing fifth, sixth or seventh receive three, two and one point, respectively.
The Argos did not win any conference championships this season but finished second in three sports. Men’s soccer compiled a 6-4 conference record to take home second while women’s basketball went 13-5 to also finish in second place. The men’s cross country team narrowly missed winning the conference, coming in just two points behind Hawaii Pacific at the PacWest Championships.
