Best-selling Author Michelle Richmond Visiting Scholar at Notre Dame de Namur University for Spring Semester

Belmont, CA, January 12, 2012 — Notre Dame de Namur University today announced best-selling author Michelle Richmond as the recipient of the Sister Catharine Julie Cunningham Chair for Visiting Scholars for spring 2012.

Richmond, who will teach creative writing, is author of four books of fiction, including the New York Times and international bestseller "The Year of Fog," which has been translated into 10 languages. The book was named one of Library Journal's Best Books of 2007, Kirkus Reviews' Best Books for Reading Groups 2007, San Francisco Chronicle's Notable Books 2007, a San Francisco Chronicle bestseller, Washington Post A-List, and was a finalist for Elle Prix des Lectrices. She has also published "The Girl in the Fall-Away Dress: Stories," two other novels "No One You Know" and "Dream of the Blue Room, " and 14 essays.

The Sr. Catharine Julie Cunningham Chair, which was established in 1980 to honor former university president Sr. Catharine Julie Cunningham, SND, brings distinguished visiting faculty to campus; the visiting scholar teaches a semester-length course and gives a public lecture that is open to the community.

Richmond received the Hillsdale Award for Fiction from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, the Mississippi Review Prize for Fiction and the James Michener Fellowship at the University of Miami. Richmond earned a bachelor's degree in communication from University of Alabama and a master's degree in creative writing from University of Miami. In addition to teaching the creative writing course on Wednesday evenings during the spring semester, she will conduct a public reading, to be announced later.
