NDNU Presents Cole Porter's "Anything Goes"
Belmont, CA, February 19, 2009 — NDNU’s Ralston Hall Ballroom will come alive with the rousing tunes of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes,” a high seas romantic adventure filled with mistaken identities and hearts, February 27-March 8.
This musical farce follows an eclectic group of ocean liner passengers, which includes an evangelist nightclub singer, society debutante, English gentleman, and wanted gangster Moonface Martin, on their journey from New York to London. Hilarity ensues as good men are mistaken for criminals, and young lovers realize that societal duty and their hearts’ desire may not go hand in hand.
Anything Goes presents the timeless music and lyrics of Cole Porter, in a 1962 revision of the original 1930s musical, which starred Ethel Merman as Reno Sweeny, infamous evangelist turned nightclub singer. Since it was first staged in 1934, with book by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, it has been revived twice, as well as made into two films. It features such hits as “Anything Goes,” “DeLovely,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” and “Blow, Gabriel, Blow.”
“It is a treat to be able to do this show in the elegance of the Ralston Hall Mansion Ballroom, and a gift to have Wesla Whitfield with us to bring these classic Cole Porter songs to life!” said Debra Lambert, Chair of the Department of Music and Vocal Arts.
The production features 17 NDNU Music and Vocal Arts students, as well as two local high school students and various NDNU faculty members. Stage Direction is by Kate Irvine Mills, Choreography by Dottie Lester-White, Musical Direction by Wesla Whitfield and Debra Lambert, Costume Coordination by Roberta Leslie, Lighting Design by Ron Ho, and Props by Matthew M.
