Wiegand Gallery - Membership
November 2009
Dear Friends,
Just as you and I depend on the arts to connect us to enduring values, so does the Wiegand Gallery depend on you for our consistent support. I hope you will join me in making a generous annual gift to the Wiegand Gallery this fall season. We have some outstanding exhibitions lined up for you this year:
• This year’s fall program began with Divine Visions Worldly Lovers, highlighting Indian miniature paintings from the collections of Barbara Janeff, Art Passages Gallery of San Francisco and other private collectors. This exhibition included paintings from the 15th to 20th century and related sculptures from the 8th and 12th the century. Robert Del Bonta, a leading expert on Indian Art and Curator of the exhibition, gave a lecture at our opening reception on September 27th. Many art enthusiasts and NDNU students in attendance to listen to the lecture and enjoy authentic Indian cuisine.
• Eduardo Carrillo: Within a Cultural Context will begin on January 22nd and run to February 27th. Our opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2-4 pm. This exhibition describes Eduardo Carrillo’s place in contemporary art history. Eduardo’s imagery is inspired by his ancestral Mexican heritage with an emphasis on figurative work. His deeply personal and quietly contemplative smaller portraits contrast sharply with his resonantly colored and dramatically themed large-scale oils on canvas and panels. Eduardo Carrillo is the recipient of an NEH Grant and the New York Art Commission Award.
• Our spring show, Realism and Abstraction: Four Printmakers, runs from March 19th to April 24th and features four master printmakers: Misch Kohn, Betty Friedman, Trevor Southey and David Smith-Harrison. Our opening reception will be held on Sunday, March 28th from 2-4 pm. This exhibition explores the range of the four artists’ approach to printmaking from classical drawing to intaglio on handmade paper. We will be hosting a fundraiser and auction in conjunction with this exhibition. Details to follow.
The Wiegand Gallery was founded in 1977 at Notre Dame de Namur University with a two-fold mission: to exhibit unusual or rarely seen work by the West’s most formative artists and to seek out artists whose work calls for greater recognition. Its exhibitions convey an uncommon grasp of the ways in which the visual arts can address issues of social justice and cross-cultural understanding.
Your tax-deductible contribution will help us in two ways – by supporting the Gallery’s programs and by underwriting the publication of brochures and even full-scale catalogues for each exhibit. Very few galleries of comparable size are able to uphold this commitment to publishing scholarly materials in conjunction with exhibitions.
As a Friend of the Wiegand Gallery, you will receive exclusive invitations to special events as well as regular announcements about our exhibitions. For contributions of $250 or over you will also receive a free ticket to our annual fundraiser and for donors who contribute $1,000 or over you will become a member of our Director’s Circle and your name will appear in our exhibition catalogs in addition to receiving a ticket to our annual fundraiser. I thank you for your support and hope to see you soon at an upcoming Gallery event.
Warm regards,
Karen Rhodes
