FERPA and Student Privacy
Your Privacy Rights as an NDNU Student
Notre Dame de Namur University is committed to protecting the privacy of your educational records. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students have important rights regarding access to, review of, and control over their educational records.
The Executive Director of Academic Operations is available to help you understand and exercise these rights.
Under the Family and Educational Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1975, you have the right to:
Inspect and review your educational records
Request correction of records you believe are inaccurate or misleading
Control most disclosures of information from your educational records
File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if you believe your FERPA rights have been violated
Review records maintained within 45 days of submitting a valid request
Requesting Access to Your Records
Students may request to inspect their educational records by submitting a FERPA Records Request to the Executive Director of Academic Operations.
Upon receiving a request, NDNU will respond within a reasonable time and no later than 45 days as required by FERPA.
If records contain information about multiple students, only the information relating to the requesting student will be made available for review.
Requesting Record Corrections
If you believe information in your educational record is inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise violates your privacy rights, you may submit a written request identifying:
- The portion of the record you believe should be corrected
- Why you believe it should be corrected
If the University decides not to amend the record, you will be notified of the decision and informed of your right to a hearing.
Directory Information
Restricting Directory Information
NDNU may release designated directory information without obtaining prior written consent.
If you do not want directory information released, you may submit a written request to the Executive Director of Academic Operations.
Please note that restricting directory information may limit the University's ability to verify your enrollment, degree completion, honors, or awards to third parties.
The request will remain in effect until you submit a written request to remove the restriction.
When Can NDNU Share Information Without My Permission?
FERPA allows NDNU to share educational records without student consent in limited situations, including:
With university officials who have a legitimate educational need to know
To institutions where you plan to enroll
In connection with financial aid
To accrediting agencies
In response to certain court orders or subpoenas
During health or safety emergencies
As required by federal or state law
